Indwelling bladder catheterization is routine in hospitals and long-term care. Its design, however, has remained essentially unchanged — and so have its complications.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections

CAUTI is one of the most frequent healthcare-associated infections. Biofilm formation on catheter surfaces, breaches in aseptic technique and manipulation of the drainage system are factors associated with catheter-related infection risk.

Bypass leakage

Urine leaking around the catheter soils the patient and the bed, generates additional hygiene episodes, damages the skin and undermines confidence in the device.

Nursing workload

Catheter care involves recurring tasks including bag management, hygiene, monitoring and management of leakage or other complications.

Loss of dignity and autonomy

A permanently visible urine drainage bag can affect mobility, discretion and day-to-day activities for some catheter users.

Avoidable emergency visits

Blockages, leakage and infections related to indwelling catheters lead to unplanned consultations, emergency department visits and readmissions.

Where the limitations of conventional catheters come from
